The regulations place a duty on every employer to ensure that suitable personal protective equipment is provided to employees who may be exposed to a risk to their health or safety while at work. Provision of personal protective equipment 4. (1) Every employer shall ensure that suitable personal protective equipment is provided to his employees who may be exposed to a risk to their health or safety while at work except where and to the extent that such risk has been adequately controlled by other means which are equally or more effective. (2) Every self-employed person shall ensure that he is provided with suitable personal protective equipment where he may be exposed to a risk to his health or safety while at work except where and to the extent that such risk has been adequately controlled by other means which are equally or more effective. 3) Without prejudice to the generality of paragraphs (1) and (2), personal protective equipment shall not be suitable unless— (a)it is appropriate for the risk or risks involved and the conditions at the place where exposure to the risk may occur; (b)it takes account of ergonomic requirements and the state of health of the person or persons who may wear it; (c)it is capable of fitting the wearer correctly, if necessary, after adjustments within the range for which it is designed; (d)so far as is practicable, it is effective to prevent or adequately control the risk or risks involved without increasing overall risk; (e)it complies with any enactment (whether in an Act or instrument) which implements in Great Britain any provision on design or manufacture with respect to health or safety in any relevant Community directive listed in Schedule 1 which is applicable to that item of personal protective equipment. Information from Wikipedia, legislation. gov. uk 5. 5 Describe employees responsibilities regarding the use of PPE The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations place duties on employees to take reasonable steps to ensure that PPE provided is properly used.

At unit 1, BMI, and as an employee using PPE, I understand that it is my responsibility, under the personal protective equipment at work regulations, to at all times, to wear and use the PPE provided in accordance with the instructions and training in the company policies and procedures (S. O. P’s). I must take all reasonable steps to ensure that the PPE is returned, once worn to the appropriate location and that the items are not removed from the workplace. I must also examine the PPE before, during and after use and any loss or obvious defects are reported immediately to my supervisor or overseeing manager. I also understand that I must take responsible care for the PPE provided. I must also ensure that the PPE is cleaned daily and that it fits and is fitted correctly when in use.

Most importantly I understand that I must not interfere, damage or deface any PPE and I also understand that both employer and employee may be fined under the health and safety at work act and personal protective equipment at work regulations if the PPE is not used and worn correctly. 5. 6 Describe employers responsibilities regarding the use of PPE Employers must provide personal protective equipment (PPE) to workers and visitors as a control measure when work hazards are unable to be eliminated or adequately controlled by other methods. Employers must determine if PPE is the most appropriate control based on risk assessment, they must also ensure that the PPE provided is appropriate for the person and controls the risk for that person and prevents and controls risk of infection.

Employers must also ensure that all employees are trained to use the PPE and know their responsibilities under the current legislation and regulations for PPE. They must also ensure that supervisors and managers are trained to enforce correct use of PPE. Employers must also ensure that they provide and pay for the PPE. It is also the employers responsibility to ensure that all PPE is properly maintained, repaired or replaced where necessary, they must ensure that it is stored and housed appropriately. They must also ensure that the PPE clearly identifies places of work where the PPE is worn, at unit 1, BMI the PPE is colour coded. Information from hse. gov. uk
