The American Dilemma
According to America.gov, “human beings possess a variety of sometimes contradictory desires. People want safety, yet relish adventure; they aspire to individual freedom, yet demand social equality.” Of these dilemmas of government, the modern (conflict between freedom and equality) best characterizes our contemporary American political arena.
The administration of President Obama, a liberal government, seeks to promote equality over a continuum of meanings for a variety of people as opposed to the original dilemma of maintaining order. Traditionally, liberals value freedom more than order and equality more than freedom. Conservatives value order more than freedom and freedom more than equality. This administration seeks to promote equality through healthcare reform, a jumpstart to our economy to fight the housing and financial crises, and changes to social security.
Though the democratic system in the U.S. is working diligently to solve the problems of our modern society—crisis I agree are important, we must ultimately take responsibility for our own well-being. I believe this is the dilemma facing Americans today. We have developed a sense of entitlement and must act responsibility for change. We must make lifestyle changes and choices. We must save for our future and take care of our health. Perhaps we should take to heart what President Obama said in his speech on election night, 2008, “This victory alone is not the change we seek—it is only the chance for us to make that change.” Each of us has the chance to change and shape a successful future.
