Procedure for properly terminating a fiber optic cable using a polish method

Fiber optic cable termination is defined as the connection of fiber to another piece of equipment. The device can either be a wall outlet or any other equipment which enables the connection of the cable to the other cables or devices. Proper and accurate cable termination exercises are of great significance mainly for the complete and effective transfer of both analog and digital information. It also allows fiber cross connection and light wave signal distribution. Cable termination need to be handled carefully in order to improve the quality of the job and also decrease the amount of time spent in the termination process.  Polish method is widely adopted way of terminating fiber optic cable, this is due to its lower chances of loss and higher reliability to the users (Rosenberg, 2000).  Additionally, while using this method of termination of fiber optic cable, the time usually spent is very short. Fiber optic network installation depends on the procedures that were followed when terminating fiber optic cable, therefore proper attention and care is essential while carrying out fiber optic cable termination.

The preparation for fiber optic termination involves collecting the essential supplies that you might need during the process. Such supplies may include safety glasses, fiber disposal bin, connectors, fiber optic cables, epoxy and also polishing films.  Other activities that are done involve stripping the outer jacket, cutting the Kevlar and coating (Rosenberg, 2000). In fiber optic termination, there is use of various apparatus such as fiber stripper, scribe, scissors, adjustable cable jacket, polishing puck, polishing glass plate and a rubber pad specifically used to polish the connectors.

The first step involves shredding the cable down to the exposed fiber by use of fiber stripper like fiberOpticx fiber stripper. Begin to jumble the epoxy resin and hardener together and load it into a syringe. Then using the syringe, inject the epoxy straight into the connector ferrule. After your connector is fitly prepared with epoxy, insert the fiber cable so that the cable is seated inside of the connector wall and the bare fiber core hangs out approximately a half an inch from the front of the ferrule. However, if your cable is jacketed, use a crimping tool so as to safe the connector to the jacket.  The next step is to allow the epoxy to cure. Additionally, begin polishing the fiber end to a smooth finish by use of fiber polishing film. This ensures that the excess epoxy is removed from the ferrule. The other step involves cleaning of the ferrule and fiber tip. This is done by use of lint-free wipe or a can of squashed air. At this level, your cable is fully terminated, however it is essential to inspect the tip so as to maintain excellent standards. Finally, testing exercise of you cable is done with an optical fiber testing tool. This is necessary for insertion loss and return loss where possible.

Procedures and safety instructions for testing copper and fiber wired media

While testing copper and fiber wired media, guidelines and safety instructions must be strictly followed. For instance, one is not supposed to stare directly into a fiber which is being connected to light launching equipment.  If this safety instruction is not keenly followed, one may suffer from permanent eye damage as a result of that ignorance. Another safety measure to consider is to deflect the data from the destroyed fiber optic cable to other fiber optic cable and networks by use of bandwidth of fiber which has slightly higher capability (Cableorganizer.com, 2002). Other safety precautions which need to be followed while testing copper and wired media includes, disposing all the used scraps properly and always make sure you use the right marked container while disposing the scraps, always do not eat or drink at any place near the working place. Nevertheless, testing copper and fiber wired media involve the usage of various chemical adhesives and cleaners; therefore it is important to follow the instructions carefully.

While testing for copper cabling, there are several steps that have to be followed. The first step involves carrying out visual inspection whereby the whole verification includes all pathways and spaces. Additionally, the following   elements have to be investigated, cable placement, cable termination and the proper labeling of all components. The second procedure is to carry out the test measurements (Cableorganizer.com, 2002). One must select the appropriate field tester to perform the desired test in the application. The last step is documentation which is very critical while carrying out testing of copper and fiber wired media. This is because it serves as a written evidence of your work.
