There are advantages and disadvantages to watching television. A child sitting with a remote in front of a television set could watch anything from cartoons to educational programs to programs with murders and sexual content that is not suitable for young minds. On the other hand, TV has its potential benefits that come from viewing some shows.
The kids can get to learn positive aspects of social behavior such as sharing and cooperation or TV could also open up a new world for kids, giving them a chance to travel the globe, learn about different traditions and cultures and expose them to ideas they may never encounter in their own communities. However, TV watching also has some negative health effects on a child’s development such as on sexuality, aggressive behavior and academic performance.
Growing up in an age where the Sesame Street, the Electric Company and Reading Rainbow were favorites among children in most households, it is hard to imagine the contents of acceptable violence, foul language, nudity and sex the is preferably watched in millions of households around the world. The aforementioned shows taught children not only their alphabets, numbers, colors, and shapes, but it mimicked what were good social behaviors. Moral values were important and parents did not have to worry whether their children were watching something that could ultimately teach them something that could corrupt their little minds.
As times changed, so did what was tolerable for the little minds in their most influential learning stages. Reality TV shows, such as, Jersey Shores, Teen Moms, The Bachelors and Basketball wives, throw moral values out the window. Violence, nudity and foul language are the most prevalent methods used to sell these shows to the American public and unfortunately, far too many children are viewing these programs and taking in and acting out the dysfunctional behaviors and relationships portrayed by the characters of these shows. Parents are either working during these times is just not monitoring what their children are watching.
