Desert and glacier landscapes contrast and formation process. Desert are created via natural ways, through climate changes and natural erosion, the wind blowing in those areas carries little or no moisture, bringing only fog and mist but no rains also those winds pick up and carry rock particles and those, will erode the ground and or the other rocks creating furthermore erosions, those desert’s also are the result of human activities such as deforestation, when humans deplete an area of the fragile eco system and natural protections from eroding winds, and the inability of the ground to retain water and thus provide necessary and vital conditions for the fauna to live and grow, the area is left to be consumed and over taken by the advancing desert. (thinkquest, 1999). Glacial landscapes are created by the retrieval and or movements of the ice cap over the rocks and terrains, the movements of the ice will pick up rocks, dirt and others ground component, the weight of the ice will crush by pressure the rock bed, the melting waters will help in eroding and moving the particles away as well.
This pressure will leave behind glacial lakes and others crushed rocks giving clues in what directions the glacier was moving. (Wikipedia, 2010). The contrast between both landscapes is the eroding material, they both are the result of erosion, the desert erosion is due to mechanical and chemical erosion process, then the wind caries the sediments and erode more the land, the glaciers are through mechanical erosion process, the broken down rock by water expansion from freezing, the mechanical erosion of the water melting and transporting the sediments somewhere else, the ice picking up debris and rocks and carrying them as well as the ice slowly moves is as well mechanical erosion.
As you can see they are both the same, they are both the results of erosion, from different elements, yet they are the resulting landscape after erosions occurs, the reasons of why erosion occurs are various, from natural process to weather changes and climate changes as well. This is observed today in the ice cores drilled by researchers, the ring of the tree also shows you climate changes, climate changes are a natural process of the hearth, they depends in such things like the sun, the hearth axis, the gases emissions of animal life, plants, volcanoes and human activities, the hearth has undergo many different climate changes, periods of ice ages, mini ice ages etc seems to occurs at random and yet as a cycle.
The Industrial ages created an excessive production and release In the tmosphere of what we commonly call greenhouse gasses, the human factor in the production and release of those gasses is contributing to an acceleration of the warming process of the hearth, affecting the future of our landscapes ultimately as well, gasses like carbon dioxide, found in the volcanoes emissions for an example as a natural source, this gas production is greatly increase by human activities on the planet, this gas is directly related to the climate changes, Carbon dioxide is dissolved in the ocean, helping the ocean cool, if too much of this gas is dissolved in the ocean, the ocean will become too cold and this will affect the warmth of the hearth, and reverse effect can be observed when less carbon dioxide is dissolved in the ocean, the ocean stay warmer and so is the planet. Human factor is definitely a factor in the global warming, since the industrial age begins, we have observed a rapid increase of the temperature around the globe.
Some of the effect we were able to observe and records includes increased rainfall in some areas, the global temperature has increased, the oceans level as well has increased, so from a logical approach, if the global warming persist, we will witness more ice cap and glacier loss, increased desert area due to less water available from snow and ice melting waters to reach those areas. Also we will experience more catastrophic natural event like tornadoes, hurricanes and typhoons. All of those are closely related to climate and will increase or decrease accordingly to the changes. If the oceans increase in levels, the erosion of the coastal areas will change the landscape and the eco system of those areas. If the hearth warm up too much the glaciers might melt too much and even melt completely, this would be devastating, and would create more erosion and desert area around the globe.
I believe the planet will have a change in ocean coastal area, we might lose a lot of wetlands and their inhabitants and fauna, the deserts will increase in size and make it more difficult for humans to survive, because of the loss in valuable cultivable land to the harsh climate of the desert, in the event the glaciers melt completely, this will increase the desertification of some areas and limit the fresh water supply accessible to humans, the climate will change drastically and the weather will be affected as well, with increased sand storms from the deserts, rain falls in some areas, hurricanes strength due to the oceans warming up, all aspect of the planet will change somewhat, from the climate, the environment and the geological settings will be affected, each at different levels.
