An inspiring evening with a rugby legend
It’s not every day that you get to spend time in the presence of a sporting legend.
A Wednesday evening in Cardiff and UpriseVSI had the great pleasure of partnering with top 100 UK law firm Hugh James for an amazing event at their incredible new offices in the new Two Central Square building in the city centre.
It was a chance to chat with clients, colleagues and friends, to eat some amazing food and listen to the inspiring words of former Wales and British & Irish Lions captain, Sam Warburton.
As our Managing Director, Gareth Rees Jones, said in his closing speech on the night, Hugh James’ new headquarters is up there with the very best and they have certainly raised the bar when it comes to corporate hospitality in Cardiff.
The evening’s entertainments were held on the 7th-floor client suite of the remarkable new Two Central Square offices, offering a mix of refined style and modernity with some incredible panoramic views of the city and Cardiff Bay.
Fostering the close relationship between UpriseVSI and Hugh James, the event was an opportunity to share an evening with a mix of both companies’ clients.
It offered a relaxed environment where different people from different organisations could come together for some quality social time and, of course, the chance for always-valued networking.
The seventy guests in attendance were treated to some truly amazing dining and high-end service from the in-house hospitality team at Hugh James, ensuring glasses were never allowed to run dry.
And, as the coffees were served, so everyone’s attention was drawn to the front, listening to the ever-eloquent words of the night’s guest of honour.
With such a remarkable career (at such a young age!), it would be easy for Sam to regale an audience with endless talk of past glories, of famous clashes with old opponents, or funny anecdotes from changing-rooms past.
Tonight, however, the talk was on leadership and how his experiences of being thrust into a prominent leaders’ role at the tender age of twenty-two helped shaped his outlook on life.
The Four Principles of Leadership
Sam spoke about the leadership qualities that Wales coach, Warren Gatland, identified in him and why he chose him to be Captain as well as Sam’s initial reluctance to take on the role.
However, having done so, he identified four Ps that were the key principles of leadership he stuck to throughout his career:
- Personal Relationships
It was an inspiring, honest, funny and perfectly delivered speech, as the rapt attention, nodding heads and appreciative applause of the audience would prove.
It was also the ideal way to cap an amazing evening.
We’d like to thank our joint-hosts Hugh James for their hospitality and to all our amazing guests for coming along and helping to make this such a fabulous event.
Lastly but certainly not least, we’d like to say a big thank you to Sam for his time and for inspiring us all to become better leaders.
